Jack Russell Care

About this site |

I am a
JRT enthusiast,
by no means an expert, and saw a need for a Jack Russell Terrier
website based
in Australia.
This site aims to celebrate the JRT with great news stories and
interesting facts. Various aspects of JRT welfare,
including useful tips about care, exercise, diet, and what to
expect from your dog.
There is great
variety within the Jack Russell Terrier and derivative breeds.
Tall, short, rough, smooth, short coated, many don't seem to
fit a clear standard even though they are demonstrably "Jack
Russells". Some reasons as to the diversity within the breed are
explained on the History page.
Welfare
issues are of concern here in Australia and in the United
States.
Jack Russells are a breed made famous by TV shows such as Frazier
(Eddie) and the JRT featured in the Movie "The Mask".
This popularity has seen some thoughtless people cashing in on the
interest, and JRT's have become a favourite of backyard breeders
and puppy farms. BYB and puppy farms breed dogs with little
consideration of genetic factors, and often without any care for the
welfare of the breeding animals themselves. Some cases have been
appalling in terms of cruelty and neglect.
The selling of these puppies in pet shops, classified ads and the
Internet enables people to buy "cute" puppies on impulse, without
any research of whether the breed is suitable for the their
lifestyle and situation. A lack of
forethought is often
compounded by a lack of information provided at point-of-sale
along with nil screening of prospective buyers. This way of selling
pups contributes to the presence of JRTs in Australian pounds
awaiting their fate on death row.
Ethical
Registered breeders who breed for the betterment and
continuation of the breed and produce healthy, sound, and well bred
dogs are vitally important. Breeders who screen carefully for
suitable homes for their dogs are to be commended and
supported.
The Jack Russell Care Network site only links directly to other
websites where:
- Rescue programs for
JRTs are established, and are involved in saving
pound/shelter dogs from euthanasia
- JRT breeders who
demonstrably support
rescue work
- JRT theme sites
which feature rescue dogs and refer to rescue groups
- Personal
websites of owners/foster carers of rescue dogs
- Some links for
Sponsors and donors are included
- Personal JRT
sites are linked to indirectly on the webring
I hope that you find this site useful, I have enjoyed every minute
of creating it as I do my life with my two Jack Russell
Terriers.
