Poem
|
It's lonely here in prison,
I dream of sun, of fields,
I saw them from a window once,
but I don't know how they feel.
I've never known a caress,
a friend, a bone, a toy,
I'd happily companion,
a human girl or boy.
But some men have decided,
with selfishness and greed,
that my fate shall be a cage,
and for my keep, I'll breed.
What should fuel this folly?
My kind may bark in vain.
We care not for your commerce,
and few know of our pain.
We're hidden well from justice,
for our freedom some may cry.
God grant me, please, just one request -
Let me play once before I die.

Clover Moore, independent MP,
tabled a bill in the
NSW Parliament today calling for a crackdown on impulse buying of cats
and dogs.
Cats
and dogs would be banned from pet shops under a radical proposal from
dog lover and parliamentarian, Clover Moore.
Ms Moore, famous for her dog collar neck wear and the owner of two
Staffordshire terriers, tabled a bill in the NSW Parliament today
calling for a crackdown on impulse buying of cats and dogs.
Under her Animals (Regulation of Sale) Bill, cats, dogs or other
mammals could only be bought from registered breeders, animal pounds
and shelters or vets.

Help Stop Puppy Farms

For all the joy and life a puppy or dog
can bring to individuals and families, there is a dark side to the way
that dogs (and other animals) are currently permitted by law to be bred
and sold.
This was a hard page to write but it has an important place on any site
that has information about pets. After all, people need to know where a
lot of pets come from. Some of the images viewed in my
search for information were indeed very distressing. But we can't turn
our heads forever.
This page offers an overview to assist with understanding what the
business of Puppy Mills, Puppy Farming and Pet Shops entails. The
numbers of animals being mistreated in this industry is mind boggling.
Below is a picture of dogs in a Puppy Mill, although disturbing, this
picture is very mild
compared to the appalling squalor, cruelty and neglect that most of the
animals in this industry are subjected to.
Links are also provided so that interested people can link up with
local groups who are active in the area of saving animals and stopping
Puppy Mills.
The Numbers are Staggering
...
Approximately 3,500 pet stores in the
United States sell puppies. They sell approximately 500,000 thousand
puppies a year. It is estimated that the puppy industry in Missouri is
valued at 40 million dollars a year. The puppy industry in one county
in Pennsylvania - Lancaster - is valued at 4 million dollars a year.
Australia
Don't
think it doesn't happen in Australia
Australia is not immune from unscrupulous puppy traders. Puppy Farmers
and Puppy Brokers are active in Australia as
Leo's Story will show you.

We really have to ask where is the
sense in Councils spending thousands of dollars on killing dogs
in pounds and shelters whilst allowing the breeding of more
dogs by issuing permits for puppy farms to operate.

over controversial puppy trade

THOUSANDS of puppies raised in squalid cages are being sold with
genetic health problems to unsuspecting owners.
The RSPCA investigated 21 separate breeders across Australia last
financial year.
And animal activists say these pictures, taken three months ago at a
breeding kennel in Sale, reveal the extent of what they say is a tragic
and unethical trade.
The animal protection society says that "cruel puppy farms" are using
limited breeding pools to produce a generation of dogs beset with
genetic health problems including blindness, arthritic joints and skin
problems.

ABC news
story: "... demand from Asia appears to
be driving an increasing incidence of puppy farming in regional areas.
A court ordered a Curlwaa couple to pay costs of $80,000 and
restrict dog ownership to 20 animals after being found not to be
adequately caring for all of the 120 dogs found on the farm late last
year."

Please note, these images are relatively mild, compared to the truly
shocking conditions and cruelty that many puppy farm dogs suffer.
There
are many of these
operators, including intensive back yard breeders and puppy
brokers.
Sometimes
undesexed "free to good home" dogs are a source for these
brokers and end up in puppy farms as "breeding stock".
